1930 center hall colonial
With a new floor-through central hall and a cross-axial enfilade, and unified by an oversized custom herringbone floor, the main floor of this historic 1930s house in Northwest DC gained new sightlines and a feeling of airness without compromising the integrity of its classic foursquare plan. A new kitchen takes advantage of the rationalized main level, allowing an enormous central island and a straightforward layout that maximizes storage along perimeter walls. A monochrome seafoam palette and period-appropriate details such as pointed arches and melon knobs reference the era of the house’s original construction, without becoming overtly historicist. On the upper level, a multi-chambered bath lined with a dado of striato danby marble is similarly referential to the original house, while providing amenities on par with a five-star hotel.
